An Afternoon in Brisbane

It's not easy getting out of the house when you don't have a car, in a place you don't know very well, where they also drive on the other side of the road. Anthony and I spend most of our days at home, searching the web for cars, improving my blogs, talking to people back home, or reading by the pool. It's enjoyable, but you can only stay entertained for so long. So, every chance we get to ride to town with someone, we gladly take. When our friends Ryan and Sarah invited to take us along to Brisbane while the ran errands we were more than happy to go! Sarah also messaged me about the art gallery and must see places nearby. Here are a few pictures from our touristy day in Brisbane!

At the Gallery of Modern Art, they had quite a few very different exhibits going on. Their main one was about food and the way their government tries to restrict it. It is very similar to the U.S. and how most foods are genetically modified and it's really hard to buy truly organic foods. Whereas here in Australia, their food is not nearly as modified as in the states. You can buy natural and it's not going to break you (mostly because their pay is also higher here, but that's a whole other topic). In the hallway next to those exhibits were these biospheres which looked so complex!

They also had an exhibit called Trace: Performance and its Documents, in which I saw Ai Wei Wei's Dropping a Han dynasty urn (1995) and was SO excited about. I had learned about Ai Wei Wei in my last semester at UCM and we had also watched a documentary on Netflix about him and his opposition to the Chinese government. He is a prime example of how artists can influence and have an impact on society through their art.

This was Anthony's favorite piece. He likes paintings and how realistic artists can make them. It is quite impressive!

One of my other favorite pieces was from the Terrain: Indigenous Australian Objects and Representations exhibit. This exhibit held many different mediums from weaving to paintings, jewelry to installations. It was gorgeous, and the earth tones were beyond beautiful. This piece in particular caught my eye. It was a canvas with these deep orange, red and brown dots. I love the texture it creates from a proper viewing perspective, but the close up detail photo is amazing as well!

After the art gallery we wandered over to South Bank where they have a man made beach. Let me tell you how strange of a site that is! I guess if you can't go to the beach, bring the beach to you!

They also had this wonderful garden where they grew all sorts of edible plants and trees. It was called Epicurious, and I bet we will probably be seeing parks similar to this in the United States if there aren't any already!

Thanks for stopping by guys! :)
